Examining human behavior is probably one of my favorite hobbies. It’s not just people’s gestures, micro-expressions, or eyes that I am secretly obsessed with trying to pinpoint or read, but getting to know the essence of the soul and person behind any layers or walls. Hello, my name is Anna Gray Smith, and people watching is actually a passion.

People are incredible. And photographing them is even more incredible. I like to call myself a “moody portrait photographer”, but it’s not so much the intensity of emotion I love capturing, as it is people in their habitat, just as they are, but especially…people in their zone. There is something absolutely magical that happens, when humanity is documented in those in between moments of the things that bring them joy. I believe it is powerful to see ourselves not only in a different light, but in the light of doing what sets our soul on fire.

Well, I’m tickled pink you asked! 😉 Here’s the nitty gritty goodies: I want to document you doing something that ignites your soul’s fire, something that makes you feel ALIVE. Is it writing in your sunroom? Green thumbing in your garden? Homemaking + those early morning moments with your wee one? Dancing barefoot? Running endless miles down backroads? Callousing your fingers on violin strings? Playing in the yard with your family? Charcoal dusting your hands on sketching paper? Body contorting? Taking a drive + Chinese takeout with your love? Spending time in your kitchen? Where is your happy place? What sparks joy? What ignites your soul’s fire and passion? How simple or how complex? What does your zone look like?

I like to think of this as aesthetic photojournalism. That means: I will capture you doin’ your thing organically, while also giving some guidance (aka: You will NEVER be left to fend for yourself or pose yourself!) + making you look dang good and like a badass, all simultaneously. Not a half shabby combo, AmIRight?
